If you love coffee, there are a myriad of roasters who are doing their thing quietly and outside of the public spotlight. Here is a shortlist of roasters that you might love.
Valentia is a small batch coffee roaster located in Madison, WI. They only have 1 cafe location on the UW Campus, and they roast some very tasty coffee! Their breakfast blend is a crowd pleaser, blending chocolatey Brazilian beans with sweeter seasonal African beans. Their single origin offerings rotate throughout the year, and those are the ones that we LOVE at A.M. Coffee Co.
Ruby is a nice surprise as you drive North in Wisconsin. As another small batch roaster, Ruby finds a nice balance between specialty coffee exploration and the everyday coffee drinker. Their blends meet the needs of thousands of coffee drinkers in WI, and their long-term relationships with coffee producers give them a leg up in the single origin game. They curate micro-lot gems that give specialty coffee geeks something to geek out about.
These guys are a big deal in the specialty coffee world, but many people in Wisconsin have never heard of them. Located in Madison, WI, JBC curates some of the most fun, explorative coffees in the United States. Expect to pay a pretty penny for these fun coffees, but expect a fun experience that you [probably] can't find at your mom/pop coffee shop.
Cool name. Cool branding. Cool people. But most importantly, fantastic coffee! The A.M. Coffee Co story was influenced by one of the owners of Coffee Wizards (Sam Brown), and we are so impressed with the business that these people have built. Give them a try, and you won't be disappointed. Even better, reach out to them and ask them questions about coffee, and you'll find them to be some of the genuinely awesome humans in the coffee world. They're another gem that operates up north in Wisconsin, and they're building a following all over the state.
Venturing just outside of Wisconsin, we want to share of a little known roaster who is doing some amazing things! Tom Hansa got his start in Milwaukee, but over the years, he has build an amazing coffee business by curating relationships with coffee producers in multiple origin countries. Tom and his team are cranking out some of the most fun coffees that we experienced in 2023, and we know that you'll be glad that you gave them a shot.
