If you love coffee, there are a myriad of roasters who are doing their thing quietly and outside of the public spotlight. Here is a shortlist of roasters that you might love.
If you missed last year's list, here it is.
Neighborly Coffee, the familiar coffee company that you’ve never heard of. The company is owned by Ryan Hoban, who also founded Interval Coffee, a small chain of cafés in the MKE area. In our opinion, Ryan is the most talented roaster in MKE. Everything he roasts is top-tier, and his consistency from origin to origin is amazing. While Neighborly focuses primarily on wholesale and online sales, Interval brings that same commitment to quality in the café, offering high-quality drink experiences and great food.
Pilcrow Coffee, also based in Milwaukee, is a specialty coffee roaster known for its expertly roasted beans and warm, welcoming café environment. With a focus on small-batch roasting, Pilcrow keeps a fresh rotation of different coffee origins. Their cozy café, located in the heart of Milwaukee, is the perfect place to enjoy expertly brewed coffee in a relaxed setting. Pilcrow is also known for its creative cold brew flights, where visitors can sample a variety of cold brews to share with a friend. We LOVE Pilcrow's café setting and highly recommend buying their beans for your home brewing.
Stone Creek Coffee has been a cornerstone of the city’s coffee culture since 1993. They take great pride in their direct relationships with farmers, ensuring "Farm to Cup" experiences. Stone Creek is serious about the craft of specialty coffee, but they’re equally serious about their company values which is refreshing in the coffee community.
Stone Creek has an amazing rewards program for their regular customers, and they consistently release "Reserve" coffees that highlight the very best of specialty coffee from around the world. If you visit a Stone Creek café, expect highly trained baristas who can answer all of your coffee geek questions.
Founded in 2018, Vennture Brew Co is well-known in the MKE area for both coffee and beer. As a young company, it’s not easy to maintain high-quality coffee environments with well-trained baristas, but Vennture has been pulling that off since they opened. It’s one of the few places in MKE where you can still get a pour-over, and we LOVE that!
They keep a steady rotation of different origins, occasionally offering a special, more rare option on their menu. Fortunately for the suburbs, Vennture opened a new location in Brookfield, sprinkling a little rain in the coffee desert.
Speaking of pour-overs, Hawthorne brews every cup of coffee manually. They serve every drip coffee as a pour-over, and no surprise, with all that practice, they do a fantastic job. Their espresso drinks are served by well-trained baristas who care about their craft. It's a great coffee experience in café!
Their beans are consistent and solid. Expect single-origin coffees that are sweet and balanced, never over-roasted. Hawthorne is yet another amazing family-owned company that is worth your patronage.
Last and not least, go to a grocery store and find a bag of Wonderstate. We LOVE their quality and their approach to specialty coffee. Even though Wonderstate doesn't have a café in MKE, you can find their beans at Copilot in Waukesha and Likewise in MKE.
